Karafuto to zu

"In the 12th year of Bunsei (1829), Dr. von Siebold was banished from Japan on suspicion of purchasing maps of the County and documents, then forbidden to be taken out of Japan, from Kageyasu Takahashi, Tenmonkata of the Bakufu, and others. It was in his 7th year in Japan (Siebold Affair). Von Siebold (1796-1866) was a medical doctor in the Dutch Trading Post in Nagasaki, well known as a man who opened a private medical school in Narutaki in the outskirt of Nagasaki to teach western medicine. ""Karafuto tozu"" is one of the items confiscated from the belongings of von Siebold after the exposure. A slip of paper affixed on the map reads ""confiscated from the possessions of Siebold"". This map was drawn based on the result of Rinzo Mamiya's expedition to Karafuto (Sakharin) (which proved that it was an island). Original size: 57cm east-west X 131cm north-south
