Tokaido bunken no zu

These are picture of trip on Tokaido, published in the third year of Genroku (1690). They describe the aspects of Tokaido from Edo to Kyoto in 5 volumes of orihon (folding book). The word "bunken" is said to signify actual measurement and the mapping scale is 1:12,000. Hanji Fujii, doctor of Toyama Clan is considered to be the person who carried out the actual measuring and to have the most accurate distance and direction at that time. Illustrations of people travelling and landscapes along the road are painted by Moronobu Hishikawa.
