Survey Chart for the Yokosuka Shipyard in Sagami Province
In the first year of Keio (1866), the Tokugawa Shogunate began constructing the Yokosuka Iron Foundry with assistance from France. Among the several Frenchmen who joined in the work was Francois Leons Verny (1837 - 1908), who served as chief engineer and arrived in Japan in the 2nd year of Keiko (1867). The construction continued even after the Tokugawa Shogunate's overthrow in the Meiji Restoration. As jurisdiction passed from the Ministry of Industry to the Navy, the project was renamed the Yokosuka Shipyard, and the first dock was completed in the 4th year of Meiji (1871). This chart is a ground plan drawn by a Frenchman in the initial phase of construction. Verny also assisted the construction of lighthouses at Kannonzaki, Jogashima, Noshimazaki and Shinagawa as well as water pipes at Hashirimizu before returning to France in 1876.
