● What is National Archives of Japan Digital Archive?

National Archives of Japan Digital Archive provides access to the descriptions and digitized images of the historical records preserved by the National Archives of Japan through the utilization of cutting-edge information technology. At anytime and at anywhere, you can search for the descriptions and view the digitized images of the records of historical value in our custody via the Internet.

  • What can you do with Search and View our Holdings?

    You can run the keyword or layered search, and view the detailed descriptions and digitized images of the records preserved by the National Archives of Japan. You can, according to your circumstances for the use of the Internet, view the digitized images in the formats of JPEG2000, JPEG(Advanced), PDF/A or JPEG. You can also run the cross-file search linked to various data bases worldwide to share a wide range of information and knowledge.
    This system is now providing the digitized images of the records including those of the cabinet meetings concerning the postwar reforms such as the formulation of the Constitution of Japan.

  • What can you do with Important Cultural Properties?

    National Archives of Important Cultural Properties enables you to view digital clarity of the materials which are designated Important Cultural Properties, or large-sized or colorful ones which you have some difficulty in viewing in our reading room, preserved by the National Archives of Japan. You can search for them by region or category and will have a detail or full view of the digitized images of the materials by zooming in or out, in either format of JPEG2000 or JPEG(Advanced). It delivers a clear view of delicate original materials to you online.
    National Archives of Important Cultural Properties is now providing the digitized images of the original of the Constitution of Japan and others such as "Tempo no Kuni Ezu," maps of provinces compiled by the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1848, one of which is 7 meters on a long side, and the drawings of air-raid damaged sites of 1945.

Information offered

● The Government Records and the cabinet library

Descriptions data of about 750,000 volumes of the records which were transferred from the ministries and agencies of the government of Japan, and also 480,000 volumes of Japanese and Chinese books, are offered.
And, there are about 6,120,000 flames (and futher data provided from Japan Center of Asian Historical Records about 10,550,000 flames linkaged).
It is continued to digitalize materials that include records related with Constitution of Japan, reforming of administration system after WWII, etc.

● Important Cultural Properties

Digitized images of records including the original of the Constitution of Japan, and others such as "Picture Map of the Shinbashi-Yokohama Railroad," and those of 83 items of "Tempo no Kuni Ezu," maps of provinces compiled by the Tokugawa Shogun in 1848, designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, etc.
Now these 1473 items (2015 flames) are available.

● Searching in NAJ Digital Archive

  • Q1. How do I search in Digital Archive?
    A1. Go to www.digital.archives.go.jp,and then, you will see the top page and keyword box. You can type "free keyword" in that box. In the case of many results, you can also use various "refine search."
    Also, you can use "layered search," which enables to search by tracking the hierarchy by government ministry or agency, in descriptions.
  • Q2. Do you have English or other languages description translated from Japanese?
    A2. There are some materials written by English, French, Chinese, etc., in NAJ holdings, and also in our description. So, when you search these materials, you could find by using that language in the description. If you search Japanese materials, you should check language system for Japanese in your PC, and then, enter Japanese phrases into keyword box.
  • Q3. What kinds of phrase should I enter into keyword box for getting fine results?
    A3. It is specified any phrase or keyword, such as file/item title or the name of the creating department. And it is recommended to enter a part of phrases included in complete title, especially in the case of searching by law title, etc.
  • Q4. What is an advantage in "layered search"?
    A4. It enables to search without clear information of descriptions, because, in "layered search," you can search by tracking the hierarchy by government ministry or agency. And furthermore, you may be able to get the overall map of NAJ holdings or record groups.
  • Q5. How to Search by NAJ Call No.?
    A5. (1) Governmental Documents
    In the case of "Constitution of Japan," Call No. is "分館-KS-000-00・御30168100," you should enter "御30168100" into a keyword box.
    (2) Former Cabinet Library's materials
    For examples, "Azumakagami," which is an Important Cultural Property, will be found by enter following Call No. "特103-0001" into a keyword box.
  • Q6. In description, there, although, are some traditional Japanese characters, can I search by such as traditional Japanese characters?
    A6. Yes, you will have searching results by JIS level 2 Japanese Kanji.
  • Q7. Can I search by name of people from Cabinet Library Collection?
    A7. Yes, you can search by name of author or editor.
  • Q8. What is "Cross-file Search"?
    A8. It is, in other words, traversal search, which can search "traversally" in multiple databases of multiple institutes through our system.
  • Q9. Can I search JACAR database in NAJ Digital Archive?
    A9. You can search JACAR descriptions through our system with "Cross-file Search," and also, see some digital images which are provided by JACAR in the case of NAJ holdings.

● Results of Searching

  • Q1. Too much results block out my search. How to do "search refinement"?
    A1. You can do "search refinement" in your search results with adding a keyword after " (space)".
  • Q2. Can I sort my search results?
    A2. There are a sort function on search result page, by "title," "fonds/series," "origination," "date."
  • Q3. I found the same title among different items in my search result?
    A3. These are different items because these have different created dates or former holders, editorial versions.

● About Images of Materials

  • Q1. Can I see all of your holdings as digital image?
    A1. On April 2011, you can see 1.23 million volumes (about 6.12 million images).
  • Q2. I found multiple types of "browse" icons, colored in blue, orange and green. What are those and tell me the meaning of the color difference?
    A2. Colors show the difference of charactors of images of materials. Blue icons indicate images of the governmental document in JPEG2000, JPEG(Advancesd), PDF or JPEG format. Green icons indicate large-sized or colorful materials like Important Cultural Properties in JPEG2000 or JPEG(Advancesd) format. Orange icons indicate image-data supplied by JACAR in DjVu format. Red icons indicate electronic records of the governmental document in JPEG2000 or PDF/A.
  • Q3. I can not see material images. Could you tell me any reasons?
    A3. Could you check installation status of Plug-In in your PC?
    In the case of further errors occurred, please check "JavaScript setting" or "popup blocker", etc.

    JPEG(Advanced): small data size, printable (rough copy), suitable for low spec PC
