Hokkaido

The national highway system commenced in the 9th year of Meiji (1876), at Nihonbashi, Tokyo whereupon the roads were classified into first, second and third classes. The classes were abolished on January 8, the 18th year of Meiji (1885), the width of the roads was determined as 12.6m or more and national highways were sequentially numbered from Route1 .
