- In August 1952 the Technical Research and Development Department of the National Safety Agency was established, and in accordance with the establishment of the Defense Agency in July 1954, it became the Technical Research and Development Department of the Defense Agency, and in May 1958, it was renamed as Technical Research and Development Institute of the Defense Agency. Official duties of the Institute include technical research, plan, design, test production and experimentation of reserves and equipment of the Self-Defense Forces as well as scientific investigation and research on important subjects necessary for the Self-Defense Forces
