- In 1931, the National Parks Law was enacted and the Ministry of the Interior Health Bureau Health Division became in charge of its administration. When the Ministry of Health and Welfare was established in 1937, the Division was transferred over to the Ministry of Health and Welfare Physical Strength Bureau Facilities Division. The administration of national parks was suspended temporarily in 1944 and was revived after World War II in 1946, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare Public Sanitation Bureau Health Division (afterwards Public Health Bureau Investigation Division) became in charge of it and was upgraded to the Ministry of Health and Welfare National Parks Department in 1948. The Ministry of Health and Welfare National Parks Bureau was established in 1964 and became the Ministry of Health and Welfare Minister's Secretariat National Park Department in 1968. With the formation of the Environment Agency in 1971, the administration was transferred over to the Environment Agency Nature Conservation Bureau Conservation Administration Division and reorganized as the National Park Division in 1990. The Environment Agency was raised to the Ministry of the Environment in 2001 and the Division continues to exist today.

- Scope and Content
- As the nation's interest grew in promoting development of tourist spots from the viewpoint of developing international tourism as an industry for obtaining foreign currency, the first national park was designated as such under the National Park Law (1931 Law No. 36), which was established in 1931. Although the Law was abolished in 1957, its provisions were taken over by the Natural Parks Law (1957 Law No. 161). Materials in this unit include documents related to deliberation councils , park planning, zoning, surveys, etc. for national parks designated in accordance with the National Park Law during the period before 1950, including prewar periods (documents transferred in 1972). Most of the documents consist of those related to permission and approval required for operating various businesses in the national park.
