- In January 1878, the Pension Section was established in the Grand Council of State (Dajokan) General Affairs Section. In April 1881, it was evolved into Dajokan General Affairs Division Pension Section and the Pension Section was repealed due to disposition of official duties in November 1882. In January 1884, the Pension Bureau was established in the Dajokan. On December 22, 1885, following establishment of the cabinet system, it was developed into the Cabinet Pension Bureau. On 24 of the same month, the Pension Bureau was abolished and the Cabinet Accounting Bureau Pension Division was set up and, in July 1890, the Cabinet Pension Bureau was established. In May 1947, based on enactment of the Prime Minister's Agency Edict, it became Prime Minister's Agency Pension Bureau. Furthermore, based on enactment of the Establishment Law of the Prime Minister's Office in June 1949, it was developed into the Prime Minister's Office Pension Bureau. In July 1984, based on enactment of the Establishment Law of the Management and Coordination Agency, it was developed into the Management and Coordination Agency Pension Bureau. In January 2001, it became the Management and Coordination Ministry Personnel and Pension Bureau.

- The pension system was established in accordance with the Regulations for Support of Injured Army Officers, Funeral Services for Dead Army Officers and Support of Surviving Families (1875 Dajokan order No. 48)" and the Navy Retirement Ordinance (1875 Grand Council of State order No. 148)." Pension Settlements Original Records include application forms, family registries and medical certificates, etc., submitted by applicants, as well as materials related to settlements by the authorities, which are classified by individual. One original document contains data on more than 20 individuals. Original annual pension records of the Imperial Household Agency are also included.
