- In August 1872 the Ministry of Justice Police and Public Security Administration was established and moved to the Ministry of the Interior in January 1874, and by the Grand Council of State (Dajokan) Proclamation No. 51 in April 1876, the three administrations of family registry, postal service, and police and public security were abolished, and newly established as a bureau by the Ministry of the Interior Second (Otsu) Declaration No. 52 on May 2. On January 11, 1877 it became the Police Headquarters Bureau and the name was changed to Police and Public Security Bureau on January 14, 1881, which continued until the abolishment of the Ministry of the Interior on December 31, 1947.

- 1. Records transferred in 1997 (803 volumes): These are documents concerning police administration taken over by the National Police Agency from the Ministry of the Interior. They consist mainly of the Police and Public Security Bureau Chief's Resolution Documents (1893-1947), the Interior Minister Resolutions Documents (1896-1947), the Local Commissioners Police Deputy Council (1926-1940), documents related to Imperial Diet, disaster-related documents, special police monthlies, documents related to police publications, police reference materials formerly possessed by Mr. Kazuo Tanemura. Also included are prefectural guidance and supervisory documents, governor reports, etc. concerning all cases and regulations.|br|2. Records transferred in 2000 (15 volumes): These include two files of documents of the original drafts of directive regulations, etc. (from 1945 onwards), three volumes on the organization, rules and equipment of police units (from 1944 onwards), three volumes related to police phones, two compiled volumes of correspondence documents after World War II, overview of the establishment of the Security Head Office, security planning of Ministry of the Interior Mobilization, compilations of original drafts of automobile regulation orders, etc. Police units were established by Edict No. 243 in April 1944 and was abolished by the order of the GHQ in February 1946.
