- Most of them were once part of such fine collections as the Momijiyma Bunko, the Shoheizaka Gakumonjo the Wagaku Kodansho and Igakukan Collection owned by Tokugawa Shogunate. In addition to those collections, the it has many ancient manuscripts and documents formerly in the possession of old temples, and noble and samurai families and post-Meiji Restration government publications.
- Scope and Content
- The books are mainly collections of classic books such as a former collection of Tokugawa Ieyasu, records of Tokugawa government and ancient documents collected by Meiji government. They can be classified into classic books, ancient documents, work reference books collected by Cabinet after Meiji Restoration as library and publications of ministries.Momijiyama Bunko (Library) books that were in the library of Tokugawa government can be cited first as classic books, including<a href="http://www.digital.archives.go.jp/DAS/meta/listPhoto?KEYWORD=&LANG=default&BID=F1000000000000047829&ID=&TYPE=&NO="_blank">“Azuma Kagami”</a>, favorite books read by Tokugawa Ieyasu, books in Suruga Library that is a collection of books including “Honcho-zoku-bunsui,” an important cultural asset, ancient books in various locations searched on order of 8th-generation shogun Yoshimune, and “Honcho-tsukan” and<a href="http://www.digital.archives.go.jp/DAS/meta/listPhoto?KEYWORD=&LANG=default&BID=F1000000000000047903&ID=&TYPE=&NO="_blank"> “Tokugawa Jikki” </a>compiled by Tokugawa government. Also included in the collection are a former collection of books owned by Hayashi Family such as <a href="http://www.digital.archives.go.jp/DAS/meta/listPhoto?KEYWORD=&LANG=default&BID=F1000000000000043184&ID=&TYPE=&NO="_blank">“Nozuchi,”</a> “Nozuchi,” an explanation of “Tsurezuregusa” written by Hayashi Razan, and historical records for editing geographical descriptions. Books of Wagaku-kodansho include “Kankensho,” an important cultural asset, <a href="http://www.digital.archives.go.jp/DAS/meta/listPhoto?KEYWORD=&LANG=default&BID=F1000000000000047816&ID=&TYPE=&NO="_blank">“Shiryo”</a> (historical records” edited by Hanawa Hokiichi and many books used by Hanawa Hokiichi in compiling “Shiryo.” As part of collections of documents and records by Meiji government, documents of Todaiji Temple including oldest documents owned by the archives, documents of Daijoin of Kofukuji Temple, ancient documents of Kuchiki Family were purchased. Maps and documents purchased by Geography Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, and other government offices are also preserved. As publications published after Meiji Restoration, government publications issued by the ministries, including government offices in the colonies are preserved. The collection also includes reports compiled by Toa Kenkyujo, South Manchurian Railway and other organizations.
