- In July 1871, the Ministry of Justice was established. (1871 Grand Council Notification No.336) The Ministry of Justice was evolved into the Justice Agency in February 1948, then into the Justice Office in June 1949, and further into the Ministry of Justice in August 1952. Based on the Establishment Law of the Ministry of Justice (1999 Law No. 93) and the Ministry of Justice Organization Ordinance (2000 Cabinet Order No.248) due to restructuring in the central government ministries and agencies of January 2001, the Minister's Secretariat, the Civil Affairs Bureau, the Criminal Affairs Bureau, the Correction Bureau, the Rehabilitation Bureau, the Civil Liberties Bureau, and the Immigration Bureau were set up as the internal bureaus, while the National Bar Examination Administration Commission, the Public Security Examination Commission, and the Public Security Investigation Agency were set up as the external bureaus.

- Materials are organized so that official records transferred to the Archives by 2000 (original registers of naturalization permits---war criminal-related) are separated from those transferred to the Archives after 2001.
