- With the formation of the Ministry of Transport and Communication in November 1943, the Automobile Bureau was established as an independent bureau for the first time and in May 1945, became the Ministry of Transport Automobile Bureau. In February 1946, it changed its name to the Land Transportation Supervisory Bureau, and in June 1949 changed its name back to the Automobile Bureau. It continued to exist until it became the Local Traffic Bureau, which includes part of the railway administration, due to administrative reform in July 1984.

- Transferred from the Ministry of Transport Automobile Bureau Passenger Transport Division in 1974 and 1975, from the Local Traffic Bureau Passenger Transport Division in 1990, and from the Automobile Traffic Bureau Passenger Transport Division in 1991
- Scope and Content
- Materials in this unit consist mainly of documents related to general omnibus business licenses granted, and fares approved, in accordance with the Road Transportation Law (1951 Law No. 183). These are documents related to the granting of business licenses for what are popularly known as buses on regular routes and the approval of their fares. They also include documents related to licenses for private companies, as well as those for regular bus services provided by local autonomous bodies and national railways. Applications are filed with the Minister via local Land Transportation Bureaus. In each case, approval/application forms, Land Transportation Bureau survey reports, the opinions of road managers (prefectural governors), and applications from operators are included.
