Conditions for Reuse

1. Reuse of Digital Content

The digital content (images of materials digitized from paper media and microfilm, video and audio data, electronic records, etc.) from the National Archives of Japan Digital Archive may be used at your discretion.

However, the users are solely responsible for any actions taken using the provided data, including any resulting issues. The National Archives of Japan (NAJ) assumes no responsibility for such matters. In the event of any disputes between users and third parties, the user shall bear full responsibility. Please also refer to the section titled “3. Guidelines for Use” below.

In particular, if the data is used to generate or process content using AI technologies, NAJ assumes no responsibility for the accuracy or content of the resulting output. Please use the data at your own discretion and responsibility.

If the content includes rights other than copyright (such as portrait rights, privacy rights, or publicity rights) held by third parties, users are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions.

2. Reuse of Catalog Information

The catalog information published in the Digital Archive will be provided as open data under the CC (Creative Commons) license "CC0 (CC0 1.0 worldwide public domain offering)". Please also refer to the section titled “3. Guidelines for Use” below.

The indication of the conditions for reuse of catalog information (metadata) is displayed on the Catalog Details screen as shown below.

Catalog information (Fonds, File, etc.) is made available in machine-readable format. For details on how to use this data, please refer to this page.

3. Guidelines for Use

The digital content and catalog information provided through this Digital Archive may be freely reproduced, modified, and redistributed for both commercial and non‑commercial purposes. No application, procedure, or attribution is required for reuse.

However, to ensure the reliability and authenticity of the information and to promote appropriate use in the public interest, we kindly ask users to keep the following points:

• When using the content in widely distributed or publicly accessible media (e.g., publications, broadcasts, websites, exhibitions, lectures), we recommend indicating the source.

  • Example of a simple citation: “Source: National Archives of Japan”
  • Including the title of the material, reference code, and URL will help others identify the source. (For web media, please include a clickable URL whenever possible.) Citation examples are provided on the detailed catalog and viewer screen for each item.
  • Please ensure that the citation is placed in a location where it can be easily seen and understood by users.
  • There is no need to notify NAJ when using the content.

• If you modify the provided data, please indicate that the content has been altered whenever possible. Do not present modified data in a way that may mislead others into believing it was created or published by NAJ.

• Please refrain from any use that may violate laws, infringe on the rights of others, or be contrary to public order and morals.

• The data provided may be changed, updated, or removed without prior notice.

4. Use of Information Posted in the Digital Archive

In accordance with the National Archives of Japan Site Policy (www.archives.go.jp/sitepolicy), the editorial rights for the entire contents provided by this Digital Archive, such as “How to Use” and the explanatory text in the "Featured Content" section, are provided under the CC (Creative Commons) license "CC-BY4.0".
