Hokui bunkai yowa

Mamiya Rinzo (1775-1844), following a directive from the Tokugawa shogunate government, explored north the west coast of Sakhalin during the 5th and the 6th years of Bunka (1808-1809) and discovered the Sakhalin to be an island (Discovery of the Mamiya Strait). He also explored the Todatsu region, or the Outer Manchuria, in the lower Amur River. This book, compiled by Murakami Sadasuke (1780-1846) based on Mamiya's dictation of his exploration in Sakhalin, was completed in the 7th year of Bunka (1810) and presented to the shogunate government the next year. Together with Mamiya's other northern exploration reports "Todatsu Chiho Kiko" (3 scrolls) and "Kitaezoto Chizu" (7 sheets and 1 scroll), it was designated as an important cultural property in the 3rd year of Heisei (1991) under the name of "Mamiya Rinzo Kitaezo to Kenbun Kankei Kiroku" (14 scrolls and 7 sheets).
