A sea lion

Collection of sketches of fish and shells by Hasegawa Settan (1778-1843). Though born in Edo, he was hired as an official painter in the Karatsu Domain in Hizen Province (present day Saga Prefecture). During his stay in Karatsu, he produced a number of sketches of sea otters including seals drifted to the seashore nearby in the 6th year of Bunsei (1823). A large variety of fish from various parts of Japan is collected.
