5. Terms
The following are explanations of the terms used in the "National Archives of Japan Digital Archive".
Administrative Records | These records are transffered from governmental organizations arranged by hierarchy of government organization and transffered year. |

Judicial Records | These records are transffered from Judicial organizations and Original Records of Civil Actions transferred from National Universities. |
Corporate Records | These records are transffered from Independent Administrative Corporation or Independent Administrative Institution. |
Donated/Deposited Records | These are Donated/Deposited Records to the National Archives of Japan. |
Cabinet Library | These are records and materials the japanese government collected after Meiji era and also are included the historical matgerials transffered from Tokugawa Shogunate. |
Fonds/Series | Fonds/Series are offered as a finding aid for users. Millions of our holdings are categorized by transferred agency, etc. Fonds/Series have a hierarchy structure. |
Files | Materials in paper bound in books. Documents and records transferred from ministries and agencies are archived and handled in unit of file. |

Minimal unit of materials/records, sometimes including several papers. |
Call No | This is a material code of NAJ holdings. It can be used for search and request material you apply. |

This is a digital image format high by the International Organization. They are used for a long-term preservation in the National Archives of Japan. |

metadata | Metadata is information that explains the meaning of electronic data and is essential for the proper management, storage, and use of electronic data. In this digital archive, metadata includes catalog information such as the title of the material and the organization that created or acquired it, as well as descriptions of the material. |
High-Definition Digital Image | You can see large illustrations and scrolls by high-definition digital image on this sysytem. |
IIIF | The IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) is an international framework for interoperability and accessibility of digitized materials, mainly images, contained in digital archives. |
Storage location | The name of the library facility where the original materials are stored. If the name of the facility is "Honkan", the material is held at the Tokyo Honkan; if the name of the facility is "Bekkan", the material is held at the Tsukuba Branch Library. In principle, electronic public records are stored in the Electronic Public Records System, but some optical discs are also stored in the Tokyo Main Library. |
URI |
A URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is a public identifier that guarantees access and ensures data interoperability. In the National Archives of Japan Digital Archive, the catalog information and images of each material are assigned to each page.
