Asamayamayake

Mikikigusa (total 176 volumes) containing information and records written or filed by direct retainer Miyazaki Narichika during closing days of Edo period abounds with many interesting illustrations and beautiful color diagrams. Some of them are shown here.

The great eruption of Mount Asama on July 8 in the third year of Tenmei, has been called "Tenmei no Asamayake"(The Burning of Asama in Tenmei). Volcanic activities began in April of the same year and became more active by the end of June. After a big eruption on July 6 and 7, a most violent eruption happened at 10:00 am on the 8th. These drawings are so devised as to show how eruption got more and more violent day by day from May to July.
