- In December 1885, the Ministry of Communications was established. In November 1943, the Ministry of Communications was abolished together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Ministry of Railways, which was followed by establishment of the Munitions Ministry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The public administration concerning communications was assigned to the Telecommunications Institute which was an external bureau of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the regulatory administration concerning electric enterprise was assigned to the Munitions Ministry, and the regulatory administration concerning the aviation and shipping industries was assigned to an internal bureau of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. In May 1945, the Telecommunications Institute was separated from the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and became the Cabinet Communications Institute under the direct control of the Cabinet. In July 1946, the Cabinet Communications Institute was developed into an independent ministry and became the Ministry of Communications. In June 1949, the Ministry of Communications was divided into operations of the postal service and operations of telecommunications, where 郵政省 and the Ministry of Electrical Communications were newly established. With abolishment of the Ministry of Electrical Communications in July 1952, telegraph and telephone services were succeeded by the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, whose regulatory administration was transferred to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Due to restructuring in the central government ministries and agencies of January 2001, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications was integrated into the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
