- In August 1952, the National Safety Agency was established to oversee the National Police Reserve, established in August 1950, and Maritime Police, established within the Japan Coast Guard in April 1952. The National Safety Agency was reorganized in July 1954 as the Defense Agency.The Defense Agency was upgraded to the Ministry of Defense on January 9, 2007.
