- On December 28, 1885, based on establishment of the cabinet system, the Statistics Board was repealed and the Cabinet Statistics Bureau was set up. In November 1893, it became the Cabinet Secretariat Statistics Division and then in November 1898, the Cabinet Statistics Bureau. In May 1920, based on enactment of the Census Office Edict to substantially combine the Cabinet Statistic Bureau and the Munitions Bureau, the official duties of the Cabinet Statistics Bureau was to be included into its First Division. Meanwhile with May 14, 1918 Edict No. 135, with the aim of implementation of the first census survey, Temporary Census Bureau Edict was enacted under jurisdiction of the Prime Minister. In April 1921, Temporary Census Bureau Edict was repealed, whose official duties and staff were succeeded by First Division of the Census Office. In November 1922, the Census Office was repealed and most of the duties of the Census Office First Division was succeeded by the Statistics Bureau as a Cabinet's external bureau. In December 1924, based on Cabinet Department and Personnel Edict, it was evolved into the Cabinet Statistics Bureau. In November 1942, due to abolishment of the Cabinet Statistics Bureau, it became an external bureau of the Cabinet Planning and, in November 1943, the Cabinet Statistics Bureau was established. In May 1947, based on enactment of the Prime Minister's Agency Edict, it became the Prime Minister's Agency Statistics Bureau, and in June 1949, based on enactment of the Establishment Law of the Prime Minister's Office, it was developed into the Prime Minister's Office Statistics Bureau. In July 1984, based on the Establishment Law of the Management and Coordination Agency, it became the Management and Coordination Agency Statistics Bureau and the Statistics Center was set up as one of the facilities including affiliated institutes. In addition to the above, the functions of the Statistics Commission established in 1946 was succeeded by the Statistical Standards Department of the Administrative Management Agency, the Statistical Standards Bureau of the same Agency, and the Office of the Director for Statistical Standards of the same Agency which was then evolved into the Management and Coordination Agency Statistics Bureau. In January 2001, it became the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
