- Administrative / Biographical History
- With the enactment of the present Constitution on May 3, 1947, administrative authorities law was put into effect, under which the Prime Minister's Agency was established. The Prime Minister's Agency was stipulated to be in charge of "official duties to be taken charge of by the Cabinet Secretariat, the Pension Bureau, and the Statistics Bureau at the time of enactment of this cabinet order (not including arrangement of the agenda of Cabinet Meetings and other general affairs of the Cabinet.)" (Prime Minister's Agency Edict Article 1) and the Prime Minister's Agency Secretariat, the Pension Bureau, and the Statistics Bureau were set up. Due to the enforcement of the National Government Organization Law (1948 Law No.120) on June 1, 1949, arrangement of provisions in the administrative structure took place in which, for example, various provisions set under the edicts were stipulated under the law. As part of the arrangement, organs under the control and jurisdiction of the prime minister were reorganized and the Establishment Law of the Prime Minister's Office was put into effect on the same date. The Prime Minister's Office is structurally divided into head organs and external bureaus. The head organs consist of internal departments (Minister's Secretariat, Pension Bureau, Statistics Bureau, Newspaper Publication Paper Allocation Bureau) as well as attached organs and other organs. Under the external bureaus, the Statistics Commission, the Fair Trade Commission, National Election Administration Commission, the National Public Safety Commission, the Official Service Occupation Qualification Appeal Review Council, Foreign Exchange Control Board, the Imperial Household Agency, the Procurement Agency, Compensation Agency, the Administrative Management Agency, and the Local Home Affairs Agency were set up. Due to the reorganization of government ministries and agencies in January 2001, the head organs of the Prime Minister's Office, Economic Planning Agency and the Okinawa Development Agency were integrated, and the Cabinet Office was established by taking over part of the Management and Coordination Agency, the Science and Technology Agency and the National Land Agency, with planning and overall coordinating functions added.
